TRAINS TRANSPOTATION

08/28/2002

Volga-Dnepr Airlines has completed two Antonov An-124-100 flights transporting mass-transit trains from Berlin, Germany to Atlantic City, New Jersey.

The charter was on behalf of Bombardier Transportation to deliver the first two sets of a new fleet of ALP46-type trains for New Jersey Transit. The flights departed Berlin Schonefeld airport and arrived in Atlantic City the following day after a fuel stop in Shannon.

Each train consisted of three linked units totalling 31.243m long, 3m wide and 3.9m tall and weighed 52 tonnes. The trains were delivered to Schonefeld by trailer truck which reveresed up to railtrack laid on the An-124's nose-door extension ramp. The trains were then winched into the aircraft by Volga-Dnepr's load specialist team. . On arrival at Atlantic City the train was unloaded by gently rolling it out under its own weight while using the aircraft winch as a brake.

Volga-Dnepr Airlines is the world's leading superheavy/outsize air cargo specialist, operating a fleet of nine An-124-100 freighters plus a tenth on order.
