Modernized IL-76TD freighter transported unique diving equipment.

12/04/2008

As an important step of Sakhalin-2 Project implementation, Volga-Dnepr Airlines delivered the diving system from East Midlands (UK) to Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk (Russia). This equipment will ensure continuous performance of oil and gas off-shore facilities and uninterrupted oil and gas delivery.

The 25-ton cargo was carried by a modernized IL-76TD freighter due to certain circumstances. Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk Airport can not accommodate very large aircraft, such as AN-124 freighter, while UK airports have noise restrictions for IL-76 freighters, thus IL-76TD-90VD was the perfect choice for such case.

The equipment delivered to Sakhalin will be used for deep-water research activities up to 60 meters deep. It allows divers to operate in atmospheric temperature up to -30°C and water temperature up to -5°C.

Sakhalin-2 Project accounts for 10 per cent of oil and gas resources of Sakhalin Island. It is one of the most favourable projects in terms of foreign investments and one of the large-scale oil and gas projects worldwide. Volga-Dnepr Airlines already provided multiple services for the Project as it possesses broad expertise in oil and gas equipment transportation and is a recognized expert in this field.
